Told in direct, straightforward prose, Lee weaves a page-turning tale of a troubled family heading West. More raw, more blunt than a Little House story, Lee's main character Annie watches the relationship rise and fall between her hardworking mother, Mandy, and alcoholic father, Sean.
The story is organized into sections, Alone, No One, Love, etc. and chapters within each section. This gives the reader a good view of all the characters, even Sean. Although he is the father that is easy to hate, Lee makes us feel sympathy for his abusiveness and weaknesses.
“Sometimes we do things for duty and honor. Sometimes we do it just because we must," says Annie.
From odd jobs to a cowboy, Sean tried to find moments of sobriety to support his family.
Annie finds hope in Wade, but is still pulled back into her family's drama, looking to support her siblings and her mother, as Sean twists up their worlds again and again.
I recommend this historical family drama - a great read for teens and adults.
Fiction writing that goes to the depths of the heart. Very complex character development. Heart breaking reality told with love.
